Emil Matalik, 1964

On January 22, 1964, a northern Wisconsin farmer named Emil Matalik announced his candidacy for the office of President of the United States. His United Nations Party - U.N.O. (1) - platform centered on a plan for creating a one-world government, that he also intended to head. His motto was "Uno" meaning "oneness". A little less than two years earlier, on February 1, 1962, Matalik had deeded for "forever" 20 acres of his Bennett, Wisconsin farm to the United Nations in hopes that he would start a movement that would spread to all the world. His only request was that the United Nations send a flag to fly over the donated property. By late 1964, disillusioned by the UN's refusal to accept his land, Matalik renamed his party United nature's organization - 1 U.n.o., pronounced "U know". At that time he also began signing his last name first - Matalik, Emil. After his five unsuccessful attempts to get the UN to accept his land he sent life-lease deeds for five acres each directly to the heads of 179 other countries. While most sent notes of regret, some including China and Trinidad and Tobago accepted his land gift. In 1975 he reformed his party as simply the #1 Party, but retained his plan to create a new world government "1 United nature's organization".
